Is It Live?..Or Is It Minorex?

I read this USAToday headline and almost shot milk from my nose. Carrie Underwood: ‘Biggest fear’ is forgetting anthem

Since Carrie Underwood is “singing” The National Anthem at the 2010 Super Bowl, I thought I should re-post this…..enjoy.

I remember back in the 80’s, I went to a Crosby, Stills & Nash concert. Three guys, three guitars & one hell of a show. (I still to this day, can’t believe how good they sounded…LIVE!) I also remember that one of them, though I can’t remember which one (like I said it was the 80’s) broke a string. I guess nowaday’s that would mean the whole performance would be devastated, but you know what? It wasn’t , the crowd went wild. Why? Because that was part of the excitement of a live show, anything could happen. The show ended and they left the stage, and I remember burning my thumb while holding a Bic lighter high up in the air for what seemed like forever, and it stayed lit until C,S & N did an encore. Thanks guys. Well that was the 80’s and those days are long gone, and guess what? So are live shows if Rickey Minor has his way.

Just like the music that’s perfect and fake, so are the plastic cellphone flames the crowds wave today.

The following headline is from MTV.com dated February 2, 2009
“Jennifer Hudson Lip-Synched Super Bowl Performance”
Personally…I thought that it would never happen. I mean, come on? How could anyone think that lip-synching THE NATIONAL ANTHEM would be ok?

Well, someone does. His name is Rickey Minor. He’s was the Superbowl’s music producer who insisted that Jennifer Hudson and Faith Hill use pre-recorded tracks. Here’s what Rickey Minor had to say.”There’s too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the performance.” End quote.

WTF…(We’ll pretend it stands for “Why They Fake”)
There’s a new catch phrase going around Washington DC which I think applies. “They just don’t get it.”
Every major sporting event that I’ve attended had someone sing the national anthem, and every time the “rockets red glare” part came, I wondered if the singer could pull it off. (It’s a hard song to sing, I’ve tried.) But now, thanks to Rickey Minor, that’s one thing I no longer need to worry about. Thanks a lot.

Ever been in a bar where the jukebox gets a standing ovation? Neither have I.

I don’t blame Jennifer or Faith, they did what “the expert” thought was best. But the person I do blame is Minor. But why would Minor, after the game, tell the Associated Press that at his request, Jennifer Hudson lip-synched the anthem to a previously recorded track? Rickey Minor’s not just the Superbowl’s music producer, he’s also American Idol’s band leader.

I found this story at CBSnews.com dated June 13, 2008
“Idol Musicians Sue Show’s Producers” “A musicians union has filed a federal lawsuit against the producers of “American Idol,” claiming musicians were underpaid because the show’s live music was re-recorded for reruns.”

Ok, so what does all this mean? I’ll tell you.

I’ll never raise a bic lighter for my I-pod.

****UPDATE****

Well it's Super Bowl Monday. Congrats to New Orleans. And Congrats to Carrie Underwood for having the guts to sing The National Anthem live. She was great (even though she sang the last note flat.) Did her flat note devastate the performance? No.

I waited a long time for someone to do something about this….Nothing…
So if you decide you would like to then go to…
